  • What is a Learning Objective?

A Learning Objective is a statement that describes the specific knowledge, skills, or abilities the learner will be able to demonstrate as a result of the educational event. (Arizona State University, n.d.)

    Why are they important?

Learning objectives provide the learner with specific expected outcomes and helps set the proper expectations for the event. They are also helpful for the educator to ensure they keep the program on track.

How do you create a Learning Objective?

A good learning objective identifies all of the following components:

    A-Audience
    B-Behavior
    C-Condition
    D-Degree

Example: The student (A) will be able to hit (B) a golf ball with a driver (C) at least 200 yards (D).

    Personal Perspective:

I think of learning objectives as foundational specifications for developing an educational event. I cannot design, build, or manage an educational event without them.

  • What is a Way of Learning?

A way of learning is one of seven distinct areas of learning theory and research. (Davis & Arend, 2013, p.32)

    Why are they important?

Leveraging them in your practice places the emphasis on learning rather than on teaching. Identifying the appropriate way of learning that matches the learning objective will guide the educator to use a facilitation method that will achieve that objective.

    Personal Perspective:

I envision a way of learning as a lens or prism that I see through in order to make the correct decisions to achieve the learning objective.
